Hello |
|

We often think of a critical incident in terms of shocking highly visible events: an armed robbery, an industrial accident, a natural disaster, etc. To be sure, these types of events have tremendous power in the workplace and require an immediate response from the organization to its constituents. Business leaders and EAP Programs have long seen the value of providing compassionate and competent support to employees following these very public tragedies, and CCN provides this type of service on a daily basis.
But what about those events that don’t make the headlines, the kinds that are much more personal to an organization? The death of a beloved manager from a long –term illness…a heart attack that suddenly takes a popular employee…the tragic loss of a co-worker’s young child…these events and others like them often have a powerful impact on work groups, yet they don’t seem to fit into the same category as a factory explosion or an act of violence. Incidents of this nature are more likely to evoke responses of grief and loss rather than shock or panic, but are no less disruptive and painful to the workplace. Crisis, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder – it is not the incident that defines a trauma, it is the impact.
At CCN we recognize that no two crises are exactly the same and we make it our mission to ensure that each response is tailored to fit the unique aspects of that event. In this edition of PracticePoints we have gathered resources and information specific to grief in the workplace. We trust it will be empowering to leaders, managers, and EAP professionals who are called to walk alongside employees at times of great loss.
